All about digital vocal synthesizers

"Wait, so that song was sung by a machine?"

This song is one of the newer vocal synthesizer hits that came out this year. It uses the software VOCALOID 4 by Yamaha and is sung by the two characters Hatsune Miku and Megpoid [english version]. Chose this song because it has both english and japanese examples of this software's singing capabilities.

What music do these "Vocal synths" sing? What about the different voices? launguages?

The "voice banks" [as we voice synthesizer users and fans call them] can sing any genre the user wants it to. The community is wide, and the genres these "vocal synth" producers make their songs in can vary a lot. Just like normal music! Country, Jazz, Pop, Rock, even Heavy metal, and other even more small and obscure genres. The most common ones are pop or rock.

And what about the voice selection?

You would be surprised how many voices and launguage capabilities are there! If the user is creative enough, they can make their favourite voice sing in any launguage they want. There is so, so many voice synthsizer programs, but the main and most popular ones are VOCALOID [voicebanks from this program were used in GETCHA!] made by Yamaha, UTAU developed by Ameya, and Synthesizer V made by Dreamtonics.

Song "Occam's Razor" by Ferry, sung by the VOCALOID voicebank KYO. Definitely worth listening to/watching.

"The Chattering Lack Of Common Sense" by GHOST. Sung By the VOCALOID voicebanks Megpoid [English] and Yohioloid.

Well, technically both, yes and no!

Vocal synthesizers are very interesting programs that can take someone's vocal samples, drag it through a bunch of code, and make the program sing, using the recordings.

Sounds strange, right?! how can a program like that sing, or even sound well?

Oh you would be surprised how amazing these programs can sound when used well. People have done it for many years [In fact, the first singing "machine" existed even before some of us we're born!] and this technology has evolved so much ever since.

Meet Hatsune Miku. This is Yamaha's most popular VOCALOID. She is something like the face of the voice synthesizer community. This girl can speak mainly japanese, english, and chinese.

As for my personal favourite Software and songs..

My favourite VOCALOID / Vocal synth producer would be Ferry or GHOST, and well.. many others. Especially Ferry, their amazing song series called "Parties Are For Loosers" caught my attention, as these songs have a very interesting story, characters and music style. On the other hand, GHOST has a very different style of music, often paired up with a rather creepy or bizzare mood of their lyrics and videos.

The software i love and use, is UTAU!

As for the software, I'd always prefer UTAU, the free [for most other synthsizers, you have to pay], universal and amazing synthesizer i am using for over one year. Its capabilities are endless, with the option to record your own voicebank and use it for your covers, original songs, etc.. I have actually made several covers, one original song, and 4 different voicebanks which i voiced all by myself. You can listen to one right here!

This is a cover for the song "Jitterbug" sung by a voicebank i recorded myself with my own voice, named Steve Window. He's my most popular voicebank. His voice are the masculine sounding vocals (yes, my normal real voice can hit notes that deep! I really recorded him!) and another voicebank, MACne Nana, which wasn't made or recorded by me, though. She sings the more high pitched feminine vocals.

This here, is Steve, a voicebank i recorded entirely myself! He's my favourite voicebank i made! (i even drew the art!)

Well, this is the end of my page about computers singing. I'd include lots and lots more, but that wouldn't probably fit here [such as VOCALOID concerts where a hologram of a VOCALOID voicebank's character sings on a stage, live].

I hope you enjoyed reading, and that this paragraph of text helped you understand a bit more about this interesting music thing i have been interested in for a long time!
